This wall was created for ArtPrize® 2014 at Ah-Nab-Awen Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As the venue’s curators, the SCRG Collective sought pieces that invited ArtPrize visitors to go beyond traditional observation, and instead invoked participation and exploration of their role in relation to art and community. By bringing “Before I Die..” to the space, visitors were able to interact with and to implicate themselves into the piece. It lived in conversation with Jenny Ustick’s “Metanoia: You Are Here,” an installation of mirror portraits portraying and reflecting community members.

ArtPrize is an open, international public art competition that received over 40,000 attendees in 2014. While “Before I Die…” did not take home the prize, it attracted so much attention and foot traffic during the competition that the grass around the piece was worn away within a few days. For those of you who were not able to travel to Grand Rapids and visit the wall in person, we leave you with some of our favorite dreams and aspirations.
